What Is Shayari?
Shayari is short poetry in Hindi and Urdu, usually written as a two-line couplet called a sher. It grew out of the Urdu ghazal tradition shaped by poets such as Mir Taqi Mir, Mirza Ghalib, Faiz Ahmad Faiz and, in more recent times, Gulzar and Javed Akhtar. A sher packs a complete emotion into two lines: the first line sets up an image or a situation, and the second line turns it into a feeling. That compact form is exactly why shayari fits so naturally into WhatsApp statuses, Instagram captions and greeting cards today.
